Kengan Association power struggle

The power struggle that existed within the Kengan Association prior to the most recent Annihilation Tournament

The Kengan Association consists of illustrious business owners, large corporations and influential people with the current number of Association members resting at 418.[1][2][3] The are a number of factions within the Kengan Association with the three largest being the Four Dragons, the Society of a Hundred and the Three Nobles.[4]

Chairman[]

The Kengan Association has been led by a Chairman since is inception. The Chairman has massive power within the Kengan Association, being the only one who may set the rules of the matches and other bylaws of the Association, and usually has more power and wealth than any other Association member. The Chairman is also the one who decides on the format and rules for his own replacement (usually by a tournament). As noted by Atami Hisashi, the change of Chairman can cause a major shift in the balance and system of the Kengan Association.[5]

    Dainippon Bank
大日本銀行 (Dainippon Ginkō; lit. "Big Japan Bank")

Founded in 1882, Dainippon Bank is Japan's central bank. The Kengan Association participated in its founding, assuming the role of link between government and financial institution.[7]

Dainippon Bank is based on the Bank of Japan (日本銀行, Nippon Ginkō) .

Katahara Metsudo is the director of Dainippon Bank and the current and 58th chairman of the Kengan Association. Katahara is a distinguished old man with an extremely confident and wily personality, due to the influential position he has maintained for scores of years.

Four Dragons[]

The Four Dragons were the second faction within the Kengan Association to be formed and they consist of the four corporations Byakuya News, Furumi Pharmaceuticals, the Nogi Group and Yato Trading Co.[4]

Byakuya News' policy is, "Let Byakuya News Hold a Mirror to Society".[8]

Founded in 1879, it's the flagship of an editorial group that also organizes sport events, art galleries and theatrical performances. It amassed in total 1422 victories and 691 losses in Kengan matches.[9] The company is based on the real-life media outlet Asahi Shimbun.

Akano Tesaki is the CEO of Byakuya News and a member of the Kengan Association. He's a poor man whose dream of becoming the Kengan Association Chairman ended before the tournament even began. His corporate ranking is high but he hasn't hired any particular fighters as of yet.[8]

Founded in 1781, Furumi is one of the top 5 enterprises in the pharmaceutic field. It is specialised in hypertension drugs. It amassed in total 812 victories and 280 losses in Kengan matches.[10]

It was founded the same year as the real life pharmaceutical Takeda Pharmaceutical Company

The Nogi Group are an influential corporation that covers a wide range of endeavours, including the field of publishing. They have been a part of the Kengan Association since its conception.[11]

Founded in 1650 as "Nogiya", they used to be a wholesale trade service. They amassed in total 1857 victories and 453 losses in Kengan matches.[12]

Founded in 1947, Yato Trading has many commercial partners worldwide. Thanks to Rama XIII's support it is expanding in south-east Asia as well. It amassed in total 253 victories and 104 losses in Kengan matches.[13]

It is possibly based on Nihon Bōeki (日本貿易). Yato (八頭) is an alternate pronunciation of Yazu (八頭) a town in Tottori Prefecture where Sandrovich grew up.

Iida Tadashi is the CEO of Yato Trading Co and a member of the Kengan Association. He is skilled at pushing through seemingly impossible demands and is one of the best "dealmakers", even in the Kengan Association.[14]

Yamashita Trading Company is a "trading company" run by Yamashita Kazuo and is affiliated with the Nogi Group. Despite being a company in name only, it has nonetheless attracted the attention of influential world leaders, such as Mobama of the United States and Petin of Russia.[15]

Teito University is the top university and medical school in the country and in Asia. Founded in 1684, it became the first Japanese state university in 1877. It amassed in total 1827 victories and 842 losses in Kengan matches.[17]

Teito is based on the University of Tokyo.

  Dazai Yukio

Dazai Yukio is the director of Teito University and a member of the Kengan Association. He and Bando Yohei were good friends in their younger days as students at Teito University despite them being in different departments; both were intellectuals with similar tastes and both were elite students.[18] They enrolled at the around the same time, but because Dazai took a gap year, he is older than Bando.[19] Despite this, Dazai has now taken the request of the Japanese government to aid in Bando's execution.

Dazai always carries around a katana, though no-one comments on it; he says it is to commit hara-kiri, if the time ever comes for it.[19] One of his hobbies is weight training.[19]

Yoshizawa Kokomi is a nurse at Teito University, and serves as an assistant for Hanafusa Hajime, often keeping his destructive urges in check; she is close with him. While she may look like a nurse cosplayer at first glance, she is actually a fully-fledged nurse (there are a lot of nurses like her at Teito University Hospital).[20]

She hates the fact that Yukio always carries a katana around with him.[21] Yoshizawa's motto is, "Always be ready to strip whenever necessary".[20]

Hanafusa Hajime is the affiliated fighter for Teito University and a former medical professional. An erudite individual, he holds a somewhat disconcerting air about him and has a strong urge to dissect anyone any fighter he finds interesting.

Society of a Hundred[]

The Society of a Hundred is the largest and one of the most recent factions to appear in the Kengan Association as well as the faction that has been gaining the most influence in recent times.[4] The Society of a Hundred is fundamentally different from the other factions, as it is more like a pyramidal hierarchy with Hayami Katsumasa at the top.[4]

Toyo Electric Power Co. is an incredibly influential company in the electric power industry. As the leading provider of electricity in Japan, Toyo holds massive leverage over virtually every company, which it is not reluctant to use. The threat of having their power cut off is enough to make most companies think twice about crossing Toyo's interests, to say nothing of the threat of being blackballed by every member of the Society of a Hundred.

Toyo is based on the real-life Tokyo Electric Power Company.

Hayami Katsumasa is the leader of the Society of a Hundred, the largest faction in the Kengan Association. He already has a considerably number of Kengan Association members at his beck and call, with there being no end to the shady rumours surrounding him.[4]

Julius Reinhold is the affiliated fighter for Toyo Electric Power Co. He is a man confident in his own strength, believing that raw power will always overcome things such as technique, and is considered the most muscular man in history.

Ajiro Fisheries is a humble fishing company whose harbour has one of the highest catches in all of Japan, so much so that if they were to close it would likely ruin the local economy.[22]
  Ajiro Korinmaru

Ajiro Korinmaru is the CEO of Ajiro Fisheries and a member of the Kengan Association. Because of his trademark twisted headband and crew cut look, he's highly popular with "those types" of people, but he doesn't swing "that way".[23]

He doesn't like deskwork and often goes fishing himself. Surprisingly, Korinmaru cannot eat raw fish.[23]

Tochigi Destiny Land is an amusement park of dreams and magic with a copyright-free character as its mascot. It has sister locations in Florida, California, Hong Kong, Paris and Shanghai.[24] TDL made "under the table" deals with Toyo Electric Power Co. and, as a result, is soon to be bought out by them.[25] Their rival amusement park is "United Studios Juzo" in Osaka.[26]

It is based on the popular attraction Disneyland.

Yumeno Kunihiro is the CEO of Tochigi Destiny Land and a member of the Kengan Association. He has big ambitions but little potential.[26]

He is aware that his appearance is far from the land of dreams, so he participates in all events wearing a mascot head.[26]

    Village of the Dawn

The Village of the Dawn is a commune with a population of only 400 living a simple, agrarian life on a massive plot of land 200 square kilometers wide. Because of the perceived waste, the government wants nothing more than to expropriate the land, and corporations are eager to use this land for their own businesses.[27] However, it has been defended to this day by the wealth of its mayor, Yoroizuka Sanemitsu, and the Kengan fighters in his employ.

Founded in 1919 by Yoroizuka Saneatsu, the landlord that managed the famous farm of the same name, it amassed in total 282 victories and 103 losses in Kengan matches[28].

The Village of the Dawn is the one and only incorporated foundation within the Kengan Association.[29]

Yoroizuka Sanemitsu is the mayor of Village of the Dawn and a member of the Kengan Association. While he had a long relationship with Hayami Katsumasa, he is now being coerced into doing Hayami's bidding to save his village. He was also Katahara Metsudo's comrade during Metsudo's revolution of the Kengan Association.[29]

Nishihonji Security Services employs seven affiliated fighters, all of whom have an exception record within the Kengan matches. The seven are known as "Nishihonji's Seven Fists" (西品治七拳, Nishihonji Shichiken) and have garnered a lot of attention within the Kengan Association.[30][31]

Founded in 1962, Nishihonji Security Services extend in all of Japan with their numerous subsidiaries. They work on insurances, prevention from natural disasters, or data collection. They amassed in total 288 victories and 62 losses in Kengan matches.[32] It is founded the same year as the real security company Secom

Nishihonji Akira is the young CEO of Nishihonji Security Services and relatively new face in the Kengan Association. A capable martial artist in his own right, he has an older brother-like relationship with his fighter Imai Cosmo.

Penasonic is a huge corporation that deals in electronics and has held a record of being undefeated in the Kengan matches for the past six years. They have the largest roster of fighters, with 31 registered for them.[34]

Founded in 1877, they have always been led by the Urita family and is the biggest electrical appliances manufacturer in Japan. They amassed in total 554 victories and 402 losses in Kengan matches.[35]

Penasonic are based on the real world electronics company Panasonic.

Urita Sukizo is the young CEO of Penasonic and a relatively new face in the Kengan Association. He shares a unique relationship with Inaba Ryo, his personal bodyguard, assassin and his best friend.

Three Nobles[]

The Three Nobles are the oldest faction within the Kengan Association[4] and, despite their name, they only consist of two corporations: Nentendo and Sentory. The other corporation that was formerly part of their faction went bankrupt in the mid-Meiji period.[4]

Nentendo is a large company that dominates the gaming industry.

Nentendo are based on the real life gaming company Nintendo.

  Kono Akio

Kono Akio is the diminutive CEO of Nentendo and a long-time member of the Kengan Association. He may be a villain to the core, but he has business skills.[36]

Akio displays an abnormal fixation on restoring his position within the Kengan Association.[36] His favourite thing is sushi.[36]

Kono Haruo is the affiliated fighter for Nentendo and the adopted son of Kono Akio. Originally a legendary Gurkha from the Himalayas, the young man became the overweight game-loving beast he is today after Akio brought him over to Japan.

Sentory is a well-established company within the Kengan Association.

Sentory is based on the real life brewing and distilling giant Suntory.

Hashida Takashi is the CEO of Sentory and a long-time member of the Kengan Association.

While he does spend time with Kono Akio, Hashida himself is not a bad person.[37] After the tournament is over, Hashida wants to retire and live his life at ease.[37]

Mokichi Robinson is an Anglican priest from Britain and the affiliated fighter for Sentory. He is part of a powerful bloodline, being the last known practitioner of the eclectic martial art of Baritsu.

New Faction[]

This unnamed faction was formed during the Kengan Annihilation Tournament by two CEOs who were frustrated with how much power the Nogi Group was gaining within the Association. As they could not decide on a faction leader, since they were scheduled to fight each other in the tournament anyway, they decided to let the winner of their match be the faction leader; Togo Tomari consequently became the faction leader.

    Gandai

Founded in 1951, Gandai is leader in the production of toys and stationery items. Thanks to "Keychain Game"'s impressive sales, it shines in the hobbistic field as well. It amassed a total of 997 victories and 599 losses in Kengan matches.[38]

It is based on the real life company, Bandai.

  Shikano Gen
DP - Shikano Gen
Shikano Gen is the CEO of Gandai and a member of the Kengan Association. He is also a former affiliated fighter, having participated in the Kengan matches in his younger days, where he was known by the epithet, "The Good Fight Making Machine".[39] He was skilled at blows that cut the opponent's skin, though he never once defeated Magatani Juzo.[39] The company's previous owner was a distant relative, so Shikano took over the company after him.[39]

Shikano prefers longer haired men.[39]

Known as the "Reaper's Army of the Far East", Iwami Heavy Industries is one of the biggest industrial giants in the country which deals in ocean, air and space development. Among them, the project they invest most of their energy in is weapon manufacturing.[41]

It was founded in 1950 and amassed a total of 111 victories and 61 losses in Kengan matches[42].

Founded in 1972, Boss Burger, thanks to his burgers, perfect for the palate of the Japanese, spread all throughout the Archipelago. It amassed in total 52 victories and 31 losses in Kengan matches[43].

Mion and Otoichi are Kurayoshi Rino's two secretaries that she brought with her to Ganryu Island to support herself and Mikazuchi Rei. They also serve as Rino's personal bodyguards but, while they are both able to suppress the average person, neither are at the level of an affiliated fighter or Bodyguard. They were both was originally hostesses at a group-owned cabaret club and are both currently in the store's management.[46][47]

Otoichi, the dark-skinned one, is proficient with a knife, but rarely gets a chance to show off her skills as Rino often hires bodyguards other than her and Mion.[46] Otoichi's tanning policy is via sunlight only; she makes it clear than she has never been to a tanning salon.[46]
Mion, the light-skinned one, uses a pistol, because she can't handle blades.[47] Mion doesn't exactly have any defining features and she worries she's not distinctive enough, so she wants to change her look.[47]

Both Mion and Otoichi love everything about their employer Kurayoshi Rino and wouldn't change a thing about her.[21]

Founded in 2006, it has over 1.6 billion users worldwide. It amassed a total of 68 victories and 5 losses in Kengan matches[66].

Ohta Masahiko is the figurehead CEO of the Under Mount corporation and holds the Kengan Association membership as a proxy for the company's true leader, Yamashita Kenzo, who leads the company from the shadows.

After being laid off by his previous company, Ohta met Kenzo (while the latter was still in middle school) and was selected to be Kenzo's proxy. His brother is apparently a famous karateka, but he has no athletic ability whatsoever.[67] The nickname "Blubber" is one that hurt him most of his life.[67]
